What is your new year's resolution
A WWF (powerswitch program) representative (and another Greenpeace volunteer) have asked me to help in their campaign for renewable energy source to help slow down global warming. Whooa! That's a biggy, hot topic.
Knowing this generation's Pinoy mentality, I think it will be a real effort for anyone to even raise awareness on environmental issues, specifically the climate change brought about by increased level of greenhouse gases (GHG) -- the primary culprit, the use of fossil fuel.
E ano naman magagawa ko kaya sa area na eto? Even if I join the Greenpeace rainbow warrior, I may only make a small difference. I might contribute significantly if mag 'black operation' nlang ako and try destroying those coal-related establishments hahaha. Pero sige, my New year's pledge is to lead or be involved in at least 1 environmental project per year hopefully related sa global warming).
Ganto nlang, how about asking climb supporters to make an "Eco pledge" for next year, think collective (nevermind if you think your output is too little). Here are sample things you can start doing for mother earth, those related to global warming & energy conservation.
(Note, ndi ako harcor activista ah, just trying to do the campaign request, my small share to a monster issue. Not sure how to make this appealing at all, or funny, but I'll try my bit).
1. Are you using an SUV today? yari tayo diyan hehe.
SUVs are the most inefficient fuel-consumer (hence, bigger/unwarranted GHG emission).
Try parking in G4 or GBelt, 50-60% na ng cars na nakapark are SUVs ;( either we're getting rich, or getting clueless.
Asa ka pang you can pledge to opt for a smaller city car. nevermind this, haha!
Imagine: 100 of you converted to city car, saving 3li per week@ (e.g.), that's 300li/wk. Now imagine 100,000 converts??!!
2. Are you riding alone for at least 50% of the time? Commute/Car pool maximizes fuel consumption (ratio of #people per fuel consumed).
Can you pledge 10%? umm, mahirap... ndi ka rin makakagimik nun.. easier if you find a girlfriend ;) E buy big bike nlang kaya.. umm.
Imagine: you and your gf (/bf) live in together, 1 car out, and save fuel. Now imagine you have 2 gfs (/bf) living in the same house..hihi talk about global warming - it's getting hot in here!
3. Easy one: Do you still use incandescent bulbs?
Replace all of them with CFLs (compact fluorscent lamps).
You'll save 50-90watt usage per bulb, do the math (hirap eh). Basta u'll save energy, maniwala ka nlang.
Imagine: A romantic candle dinner in your place, lights off (para tipid). Nice eey... Now do that everyday (wink wink). Happy life na, energy conservation pa.
4. Home-based renewable energy system?
Solar panels? (mahal pa to)
Solar-based hot showers?
Ethanol-based cooking burners (meron na ba nun). Puro tayo gasol e.
Portable generator (ethanol-based)
Without any of the above intervention, try reducing energy consumption (and bill) by 15% per year, u pledge?
Imagine: Paying 25p a month for ur electricity bill. Now, try removing your 'jumper' hahaha.
5. Are you buying Pinoy? ako hindi lagi hehe, pero at least made in Asia.
Imported goods cost a lot of transport fuel. The bigger demand, the bigger the consumption.
Flowers from holland, oysters from france, chocolates from switzerland, GMO from US, ukay-ukay from China, whoa...
Double gain: Buy local, from green stores. (ex. local organic fruits, local souvenirs made by WWF, etc.). Are you in an import/export business, not bad per se, but hv to think of ways to reduce fuel burn (ex. use Ship instead of Air freight).
Imagine: All of us wearing "Bench Love ko to", umm. ndi na, mgimport na nga lang tayo.. haha!
6. Do you still burn your waste sa backyard? (Releasing not only GHG (methane/CO2) but toxic heavy metals as well).
Lumang style na un, try reducing waste kse muna, say 20% nx year. Do waste segragation.
Don't burn, instead compose-recycle-reuse-donate-etc.
Better yet - Precycle. Curious? read more
Imagine: Just producing 1kg of garbage per month, teka 6billion tayo so if at least half of us produce 1kg garbage, that's 3billion kg!! shucks, we're doomed. No doubt we have to colonize Mars!
99. Lastly, is your kid Eco-aware?
Awareness starts at home... remember, they're the future.
